Future IT Skills

These days it is becoming much more difficult to attend classes because of time constraints which may involve work or family commitments.

Because of this, it has become the norm to do online courses or tutorials on the World Wide Web. These courses and tutorials are so easy to use any one can do them. They explain everything so clearly that even the smallest detail which an expert may not think is necessary to be included (because he or she already knows it) will be mentioned. As I already have qualifications in Information Technology I do not think I will be attending college to learn any more on IT.

As far as the classes at Birkbeck are concerned, I don’t think they were extremely necessary for me personally to attend. The instructions could have been posted on Blackboard for me to download. They were very straightforward and explained every little detail clearly.

However, if I do want to learn anything else on IT or improve my skills I will consult www.microsoft.com, http://www.itskills.com/ or http://www.homelearningcollege.com/ to help me with improving my skills on pivoting, how to insert diagrams and obects and about macros. Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power Point are the areas I feel I need more knowledge in. I need to know more of Microsoft Excel because I will pursue studies in Accounting and I need to know Microsoft Power Point because I will be doing presentations at work.
As I do not plan to major in Information Technology I will not consult these websites unless it is extremely necessary.

Tutorial on PowerPoint Presentations

http://presentationsoft.about.com/od/presentationmistakes/tp/080722_presentation_mistakes.htm (accessed 10th March 2009)

Now this tutorial is more at my level. I wanted to know what the common mistakes are made when doing a PowerPoint Presentation.

In this day and age, eight in ten people have to do presentations for their companies or on behalf of their companies. As I am studying as well I know in time to come I will be doing a lot of presentations in front of my lecturers and the other students. So I found this website and decided to give it a read through.

There was so much useful information on things I thought were okay when doing a presentation but actually were not. Very surprising.

Mistakes could be made by putting too much information or not enough, using the wrong design template or using the wrong design them. How about not knowing your topic or using someone else’s presentation? Do people actually do that?

It also tells you the ways to remedy the situation if you do make any of these mistakes so you won’t have to ask, “How do I fix this?”

This tutorial was very enlightening. It has taught me a lot of things I would probably take for granted if I were doing a PowerPoint presentation.

Tutorial on Charts in Microsoft Excel

http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RP011055071033&CTT=6&Origin=RC011055061033 (accessed 10th March 2009)

This tutorial concentrated on how to create a basic chart which I already knew how to do. It explained how texts and numbers become contents of a chart and also teaching a few other chart basics.

Although I already knew how to create a chart I decided to go through the tutorial anyway. You never know I might see something I did not know about.

There was a visual wizard to go through which will be very helpful to someone who probably might have difficulty reading the instructions as opposed to seeing them. That was very clever.

It also shows how the chart looks after you have completed it. The use of colours really makes it more interesting. The wizard continues to explain which information becomes the X and Y axis so straight away when doing the spreadsheet you will know where to put which information.

Although I knew how to create a Chart in Microsoft Excel I did not find this tutorial a waste of time. For someone who does not though this is very useful.

Computeractive Magazine

Computeractive, 2009, 'Add a Mirror effect to Photos', 7th March, pp 47

I have never bought this magazine before (until it was suggested to me) so I can't say I know much about it. One thinks that you can 'Google' everything these days.

Well I personally never knew of adding mirror effects to my photos. I was always searching for a way to make my photos more 'funky'.

First thing I did was read through the instructions to make sure they were clear and nothing seemed to difficult. Everything was clearly explained so if you are not a computer expert that was not a problem.

Right, I started from step one following everything to the 'tee', reading the instructions twice to make sure I was not reading incorrectly. I already had some photos I wanted to revamp so there were volunteers ready for the test. Step one was pretty easy if that is the correct word to use. Now on step two there was a bit more to do with 'fancy' language but still not to difficult. Step three just had a chance to see the finished product.

All in all this was very useful to me and easy to use. I would recommend to all my friends.

IT Skills

My current IT skills are mostly self taught. I started working with computers when I was sixteen years and was fascinated by the different things one could do and the most infamous World Wide Web.

I then got my first job as a Secretary so I had to learn how to type documents making them look proffessional and to print them. I also had to do spreadsheets and power point presentations. After that the computer was fascinating so I just explored on a daily basis and learnt most of the things I know today.

During my twenties I then did courses in Internet, Email technology, Microsoft Office applications, Computer applications, Information Technology Series, Information processing and ECDL to have the certificates to prove that I had IT skills as word of mouth was never
convincing.

I am currently working as an IT Admin Clerk which is very exciting. I get to to install software, fix computer systems including printers when they break down. I speak to different people everyday when they have faults with their computers to help them fix it. It can be very satisfying when they are very grateful when you have helped them to solve the problem.

To date I am still learning as they say you learn something new everyday and you're never an actual expert as there is always something you don't know, even in your specialist area of work.
